7/14 user experience test

This user had used Blender before, but not in a while. She was not an advanced user of computers or of Blender, but she was a professional engineer.

  • She tried to replace the info area with a different area type. Since the info area is only header height, the new area only showed the header. Solutions:
    • If an area is too small to show its contents, make it slightly larger
    • Hide the info area dropdown so that new users don't try to use it, most users won't want to move it anyway
  • "Where is delete?"
    • She was on a Mac and the delete button (which is the backspace button on other keyboards) didn't delete the current selection.
  • She wanted to add a UV view, so she replaced the outliner with a UV view. Then she resized the UV view larger. This means:
    • She didn't care about the outliner, or understand its function
    • She didn't know how to make a new view, so she repurposed another view
  • She didn't have a right click and thus couldn't figure out how to close a split
  • She found the "Maximize area" feature but then couldn't figure out how to undo it
  • She pressed Ctrl-X expecting to cut, but ended up extruding, which confused her
  • She pressed spacebar and found the ctrl-up to maximize area shortcut, but that didn't work while the spacebar menu was open and so she thought it was broken.
  • She didn't realize that the search menu had a text box that could be typed in. She thought space added things to the list, not realizing that it actually just cleared the text box.
  • She kept hitting "t" intending for it to translate her object
  • She expressed her frustration that each area type's dropdown listbox for changing area type is in a different location.
  • In user preferences key bindings it said, "View 2D Butt"
  • She pressed R to rotate and then tried to press it again to confirm.
  • Even when I pointed out the drag handle in the top right of every area, she couldn't figure out its function. She tried single clicking it and double clicking it and right clicking it. Solutions:
    • Tooltip
    • Change mouse cursor to one that indicates dragging
  • She wanted to delete a whole object (not just all of its verts) but she was in edit mode so she couldn't. If all verts are deleted and an object is empty, should Blender delete the object too?
  • When I asked her what the worst thing about Blender was she replied that there was poor help documentation. That could be because we weren't connected to the wifi.
