Blender Defaults

Below is a proposal of settings that should be default, based on community feedback of new users, old users, and teachers (as well as BFCT). Discussed via IRC and #b3defaults Twitter hashtag.

User Preferences

  • Continuous Grab On
  • Trackball Rotation instead of Turntable (used to be this way)
  • Emulate 3 Button Mouse (doesn't harm other shortcuts and is used by tablets)
  • Increase Sequencer Cache limit to 512 at least
  • Rotate Around Selection on(needs fixing for painting modes)

Settings

  • 3D View
    • X-Ray and Wire display for bones
  • Nodes Editor
    • Compositor: "Hide Preview" On
    • Compositor: "Highlight" On
    • Compositor: "Relative" On, for all nodes that have it (blur, translate, crop, etc)
    • Compositor: Vector Blur "Curved" option On
  • Text Editor
    • Wrap when searching
    • Syntax Highlighting (defined per text block extension)
    • Lines Number
    • Highlight Line On
  • Timeline
    • Sync Mode to Frame Dropping
  • World
    • Ambient Occlusion to Multiply instead of Add
  • Textures
    • Default type to "Image or Movie"
    • Image Texture Mapping to UV
  • Modifiers
    • Disable Bone Envelopes on Armature modifier
  • Video Sequence Editor
    • New Image Strips as Alpha Over instead of Cross.

Addons

  • Copy Attributes
  • Save Game as RunTime

Notes

Some defaults are laptop (like Emulate Numpad) or tablet specific (Emulate 3 Button Mouse). A simple Add-on could add this option to the splash screen or so.
