[edit] Using Normal to reflect bumpy-looking textures

This example is not so well described (IMHO, and I'm really sorry to say that, and I don't want to offend anybody - really, and I know how much work it is).

  1. The normal node is not used to create the bump-map and has nothing to do with the reflections. What makes it worse - it may be that the uninitiated reader may confuse it with normal maps, which in fact are used for bump maps.
  2. Instead it is used like a kind of strange light source, pointing from the top right corner of the object and making the bump map visible.
  3. The example is not so good anyway, because it's not so much visually appealing and not directly usefull.
  4. So why not creating an example where the normal node is used as a kind of lightsource?

[edit] Alternative Example - Using the Normal Node to create special Light-Sources

Image XXX: Using the normal node as a special kind of lightsource.
Image XXXI: With the "Light" from the Normal-Node.
Image XXXII: Without the "Light" from the Normal-Node.

An obvious usage for the Normal-Node is it to use it as a very special lightsource. In Image XXX the Orco-Coordinates are used, so the blue light rotates with the object rotation. If we would have used the Normal coordinates, we would have created a kind of object specific backlight. Global coordinates a more ordinary, stationary lamp.

The Fac Value in the Mix Node (the one with the caption "Add") determines the amount of added color.

[edit] A few suggestions...

I will try to make a few comments here.

Nice Geometry Node description. I'll try to add this to the main page ASAP. I'll try to steal some information from the Map Input descriptions to make it more verbose. Or would a link be enough? --Hoehrer 22:01, 17 November 2006 (CET)
I don't think a link would be sufficient. It's to much effort for the readers. But on the other hand - why duplicate it? Could one assume that the texture section is already read? --Soylentgreen 22:14, 17 November 2006 (CET)
Already read: yes, that should be the wanted case (which still needs to be mentioned inthe page, i'll see to that), since people need to know at least some Texture & material basics to use node materials. Duplicate it: This would be possible with templates (the template is included in both places), but I do not recommend it, especially beacause of the needed knowledge from materials. --Hoehrer 14:18, 18 November 2006 (CET)

[edit] Geometry Node

Merged this into the main page. Many thanks. --Hoehrer 14:37, 18 November 2006 (CET)
