[edit] The Propagating Rotations Spine

Here's another really simple design. All you have to do is draw your spine--it can be any shape or size you want--(Switch to pose mode) and then give every bone in the chain a copy rotation constraint, using local space, targeting any bone that you want to use as the bending control object.

Remember that Ctrl C can be used to copy the constraint from the active bone to all other selected bones.

[edit] This Rig in Review

Now lets consider the benefits and drawbacks of this design.

[edit] The Pros

  • Very quick and easy to make.
  • Gives very nice arches and bends.
  • Induces twisting, but doing so affects the bent shape.

[edit] The Cons

  • Inflexible, the shapes it makes are all you get.
  • The system is based on FK, so control is very limited.
