[edit] Inconsistency?
Just a small comment on this page ... this seems to be more of a general description of node-usage ("Using Nodes")... there are no composition-specific things (except for the title and the introduction) and toward the end even some material nodes are used in the images ... this might confuse some people. I suggest to explain the "Material" and "Composition" icons on this page and explain the composition-specific parts in Manual/Compositing Node Editor (or something like this). If this is still a WIP just ignore this comment :) --Hoehrer 08:53, 14 November 2006 (CET)
Thanks for reading, Herr Hoehrer. I just got too much coffee and decided to write, and yes, you are correct, I plagerized the tut. Better now? --Roger 20:15, 15 November 2006 (CET)
Ok, so it was a WIP after all, I like the explainations in the current text. :)
But nontheless, my main argument (includes the list below) is still there: Show me one thing in the page Manual/Using_Composite_Nodes that isn't a general nodes thing (except for the introduction paragraph & images). This should all be put into Manual/Using_Nodes IMHO and only linked to in the composition section. The handling of nodes is the same everywhere. --Hoehrer 09:06, 16 November 2006 (CET)
[edit] General question
Right now we have the following pages that are nodes related (there might be more; is there one explaining material nodes yet?): [1]
- Manual/Using Nodes
- Manual/Using Composite Nodes (which is basically the same as Manual/Using Nodes as i explained above)
- Manual/Compositing Node Editor
- Manual/Compositing Nodes
- more?
It's not for me to decide, but i think the best structure would be like this:
- General
- Using Nodes
- (= combines most of Manual/Compositing Node Editor, Manual/Using Composite Nodes and the current Manual/Using Nodes page)
- Explains how to go switch to the Nodes Windows/Editor and how to use it.
- Explains what nodes are (how to add/delete them, input/output sockets etc..., howto connecting, etc...)
- Using Nodes
- Materials
- Node Materials
- Explains how node materials are different from 'normal' materials and how these are used inside nodes
- Explains that some data is not handled as 'bitmap' but as engine-internal data (in contrast to the composition ndoes)
- more?
- Material Node Types
- Explains what each node-type does.
- Node Materials
- Composition - [2]
- Node Composition (tied-in tighly with Compositing)
- Explains that some data is not handled as 'bitmap' but as engine-internal data (in contrast to the composition ndoes)
- more?
- Composition Node Types
- (= basically what Manual/Compositing Nodes is now)
- Explains what each node-type does.
- Node Composition (tied-in tighly with Compositing)

[1] referring to Höhrer: Material nodes page existing?
- Not yet...but I just might take it on unless you beat me to it :)--Roger 20:15, 15 November 2006 (CET)]
- Unfortunately I don't know much about material nodes yet (aside from the very basics), but i might get this page started soon. There are already some nice images + descriptions available from the various changelogs, Release Notes etc... this might spare us a lot of work :) --Hoehrer 09:54, 16 November 2006 (CET)
- --Hoehrer 09:54, 16 November 2006 (CET)
[2] referring to Höhrer: Composition pages suggestion
- Well, imho, tuts and examples on achieving the emotions I wrote about earlier, but that is more suited for a tut or book on compositing. And big pics are needed to see the subtle differences. This User Manual is only how to use Blender, not the creative process. --Roger 20:15, 15 November 2006 (CET)
- I never mentioned tutorials and examples, i am referring to the basic functionality (e.g. what the existzing nodes _do_ and similar) here. :) (The tutorial section already has some quite good examples anyway) --Hoehrer 09:06, 16 November 2006 (CET)
[edit] Using Nodes, Node Editor are same
the two sections, the Node Editor window (and it's header), and the generic node use section are 98% the same for both Mats and Compo. It's just the specific nodes that are different, and there's even a lot of reuse within those. Need a way to pull in 'subroutines'...
[edit] Link from here to Node Compo and Node Mat?
At the bottom of this page, I think we might want to tell the user, "okay, so now that you know how to use a node, let's put them to work. To use nodes to create materials, refer to Manual/Node Material. To use nodes to composite your scene, refer to Manul/Node Composite" Maybe a section titled "Using Nodes in Blender"?--Roger 14:10, 21 November 2006 (CET)
