[edit] Emulating the NumPad for laptop users

Follow the steps below to Emulate Numpad. This will allow you to use the number keys at the top of your keyboard as if they were on the NumPad.

On a full keyboard, the numbers on the top row of the keyboard are used for viewing layers, and the NumPad numbers are used for changing views. However, many laptops do not have separate NumPad keys, and enabling Num Lock on the laptop doesn't work well.

Instead, you can emulate the NumPad in Blender to reassign the keyboard numbers to act like NumPad numbers. This will remove the functionality of using the keyboard numbers to select layers, but you can still click on the Layer Buttons to view the different layers.

[edit] To avoid going through this process each time . . .

Pressing Ctrl U will save the current scene as the default, so every time you open Blender, the default scene will appear. Keep in mind, this includes any objects you might already have in the file!

The best way to set up your laptop is to close Blender, open it again, follow the steps below, and immediately press Ctrl U. This will make your default file exactly the same as the normal default file, except with NumPad emulation.
