[edit] How do I convert a curve, surface or text to a mesh?
Use Alt C. Note that if you want to convert text to mesh, you need to convert it first to curve and then convert the curve to mesh. Note that you can convert text to mesh directly by using the menu opened by the aforementioned shortcut in case you are using version that is 2.43 or newer.
